Team Up for climate 2024

Rapid urbanization experienced by most parts of the world has produced mounting urban flooding problems. It is already a key global challenge with 23% of the world population directly exposed to 1-in-100-year floods (Rentschler et al., 2022). This impacts a large fraction of the world’s population with the urban population currently comprising 56% of the global population and projections to increase to 65% by 2050 (UN-DESA, 2018). Climate change is already manifesting severe flooding across cities (Dodman et al., 2022) which points to the urgency of timely adaptation strategies.

As a local solution to such impacts, our team presented the solution of rain garden to control urban floods in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Save Our Wetlands

In a bid to save the rapidly deteriorating wetlands in Kathmandu Valley, SENSE seeks to promote a campaign focusing on the protection of urban wetlands. The campaign will focus on building emotional connectivity between people and wetlands, backed by cultural and mythological stories, while also raising awareness of its environmental importance. The campaign aims to foster a sense of stewardship in youth for wetlands in their locality and inspire them to take action for its conservation.

INCUBATION PROGRAMME

We are also currently being supported by Youth Food Lab to set up social enterprise vested in the utilisation of invasive aquatic weed into biopesticide.

BIOPESTICIDE PROTOTYPING

We are trying to make use of the invasive water lettuce found in Nagdaha, a sub-urban wetland for producing liquid biopesticide called โ€˜Jholmalโ€™. Initially, local youths had tried to manually clean-up the lake but the success of lake restoration has not come easy and the only way to make the restoration efforts sustainable is through an economic incentive. We are conducting testing of our prototypes at the moment.

CONSTRUCTION OF SEDIMENT RETENTION POND

We are focusing on constructing a sediment retention pond at the inlet of Nagdaha. The pond is being designed to retain the sediments coming from the catchment and prevent it from entering the lake. The retention pond will require regular removal of
sediments, for which the local youth will be actively involved.
